Phonics and Reading Schemes

Reading Schemes and the teaching of phonics

Children in Yr R and KS1 are taught phonics and learn to read using the Read, Write, Inc. scheme. This provides a complete programme for learning to decode and spell using known sounds and to read with fluency, accuracy and comprehension.

Children's early reading is supplemented and consolidated through additional reading schemes such as the 'Jelly and Bean' and Oxford Reading Tree 'Magic Key' series and through free access to a wide range of story books and non-fiction.

From 1st May 2018, West Buckland Primary School is proud to be a member of the Richard Huish Trust.
